Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Microsoft SmartPhone UsersError messages:
"Your phone # is not being reported to the RSSHome application. You will be unable to retrieve RSS feeds. Please notify techsupport@rsshome.com. See http://www.rsshome.com/faq.html"
UPDATE 06/19/2004 1) We have seen this happen on SmartPhone OS 2002. It appears to happen when the Radio is 'Off'. Select the power button quickly, then make sure that #4 on the menu says "Radio off" - it really means the Radio is 'On' (selecting it would turn it off). You *MUST* have the Radio 'On' for the application to function correctly.
2) Your phone is not reporting its phone # to the RSSHome application. The system function SmsGetPhoneNumber is failing. Please email techsupport@rsshome.com the name of your carrier, phone #, operating system version and phone model.
NOTE: 6/21/2004 - this has been fixed, download a new .CAB file.
"Trim.rss Error"
Message: System.Xml.XmlException: The root element is missing. The feed URL you are using might contain an ampersand (&) mark. Replace the ampersand with a percent character followed by 26 (%26).
e.g. Change http://www.foo.com/myrss.aspx?foo=hat&bar=top
to http://www.foo.com/myrss.aspx?foo=hat%26bar=top
"Unable to connect to the internet"
The phone was unable to get a data connection to the internet. You probably have a weak phone signal or the area you are in does not have an available data connection.
"Error retrieving Feeds file. Try later."
The attempt to download the chosen profile failed. This could be due to a weak data connection or the carrier not allowing the RSSHome application to write to the storage card.
"No rsshome.xml file found, or no feeds available with Enabled categories. Try Menu->Categories"
Two possibilities: 1) The most probable is that the application failed to download the rsshome.xml file from the web. This can happen if your carrier has disabled non-signed applications from writing to the storage card. Please contact techsupport@rsshome.com to help us try to figure out how to fix this problem. 2) You have disabled all displayable categories by going to the Menu -> Categories menu and unchecking the available categories.
NOTE: 6/21/2004 - this has been fixed, download a new .CAB file
Web Browser Users (Opera, Palm, PPC, etc.)How can I access my account without re-typing my phone # and password?
You should save a URL favorite like: http://www.rsshome.com/RSSUsers/SignInMob.aspx?PhoneID=<your phone>&pwd=<your password>
e.g. http://www.rsshome.com/rssusers/signinmob.aspx?PhoneID=18002289800&pwd=foobar
What version of HTML does the web interface require?
The web interface will work with HTML 3.2 support. The technologies used are Tables and Hyperlinks.
Do I have to use my Phone # as my login ID?
No. However, we highly recommend that you use your mobile phone #. This will allow the RSSHome site to uniquely identify you since only you have your phone #. If you are a web user from your desktop browser, enter your land-line # for your phone #. RSSHome is used by international clients, so if you are based in the US, make sure you add 1 before your area code and number. e.g. 18005551212. If you are a Microsoft SmartPhone user, your account is setup automatically the first time you run the RSS Homescreen plugin or RSS News applicatino from your SmartPhone. You do not need to manually add your account thru MyRSSHome. However, after you have run the SmartPhone based application, you should log in to MyRSSHome and change your password and add your email and other personal information.
